The Royal Clog: Asheville 1925

This was designed for the cover of the Mountain Xpress. The excellent story, by Kent Priestley, was about a historic recording session that took place there. The person in the middle is Ernest Helton, who recorded "The Royal Clog" at that session. He was half Cherokee and, at least once, wore the headdress while playing.

Carbon Cycle: a Puzzle

This is a puzzle done for Piedmont Biofuels. They're a lot of fun (I've done it about 3 times) and deceptively difficult. Buy one!

Into Your Sleeping Heart

This was done for the band Regina Hexaphone as an album cover. They eventually wanted a slightly different version but I always liked this one. It's a great album too.

Frozen Songs

These next paintings were done in collaboration with poet-singer Ben Hartlage. Most times, he wrote the songs and I did the picture, but sometimes we reversed it. Click on the image to read the accompanying poem. Ben's been slowly recording these songs and hopefully one day we'll get a chance to hear that. They're really meant to be sung and Ben's voice and arrangements are really great. Hear mandolinist David Long's version of Sailing on Dry Land. We made a book of them that you can buy here.

This is all earlier work in a larger 2x4' format. There are many more paintings, new and old, not on this site yet but you get the idea.
