Sketchbooks are much more important to me than finished works. Exhibiting them in places where people can touch them and flip actual pages is an experience very unlike looking at paintings on a gallery wall. This practice goes back to my earliest experiences in art when I would flip the pages of my friends sketchbooks. It still has the same power and intimacy. Images exist very differently in a book than a wall and working in a sketchbook encourages an entirely different relationship to imagery than working on wall pieces. Many people are stymied in their sketchbooks by the educational emphasis on literalism. I teach people of all levels how to overcome this and how to acquire a critical mass of ideas and techniques so they can engage with imagery and their experiences via a sketchbook.
